This post is brought to you by the NEO Girl Scouts.

The Girl Scouts have been around for over 100 years – since 1912. You most likely are aware of them, especially during cookie selling time, right? I mean, who hasn’t bought a box of Thin Mints (possibly my favorite Girl Scout cookie). But, what do you really know about the Girl Scouts?

I did some research on the Girl Scouts for this post – even talking to my sister-in-law who has been very involved along with her daughter for the past eight years. She gave me a raving review about how wonderful their experience has been as well as shared some of their meaningful activities and accomplishments. I actually felt like I’ve missed out on something that I sort of wish my boys would have experienced had they been in the Boy Scouts.

As a homeschooling mom I look for ways to get my kids involved in group activities. I can see the Girl Scouts being a wonderful learning experience for homeschoolers interested in participating in social activities that involve families from different backgrounds as well as learning some serious life skills. Let me share a little about what I’ve learned about the Girl Scouts.

~ Both young girls and adults can be Girl Scouts, volunteers receive training.

~ Girl Scouts can earn badges in the following STEM categories: Naturalist (outdoors), Digital Art (technology and computer skills), Science and Technology, Innovation, and Financial Literacy. Visit the website to read more about the STEM opportunities.

~ There are six levels in the Girl Scouts:

  • Grades K-1 Daisies
  • Grades 2-3 Brownies
  • Grades 4-5 Juniors
  • Grades 6-8 Cadettes
  • Grades 9-10 Seniors
  • Grades 11-12 Ambassadors

Girl Scouts in Grades K-5 earn badges, join a troop, hike and camp, as well as participate in the cookie program. Girl Scouts in middle- and high school can also explore careers in science and technology, travel the world, discover nature, and participate in projects that can change their community.

The Girl Scouts have a Mission: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

There’s the Girl Scout Promise:

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Even, a Girl Scout Law:

I will do my best to be
honest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and to
respect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

If the membership/program fees are a problem you may qualify for financial assistance.

“Girl Scouts of North East Ohio is an organization of approximately 30,000 girls, and believes girls can change the world.

Girl Scouts began over 100 years ago with one woman, Girl Scouts’ founder Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low, who believed in the power of every girl. She organized the first Girl Scout troop on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, and every year since, we’ve made her vision a reality, helping girls discover their strengths, passions, and talents.

Girl Scouts connects girls to a world of possibilities in a positive and inclusive, girl-led environment. Girls are inspired to discover their passions and empowered to reach their full potential through a proven leadership development program.

Today, as yesterday, Girl Scouts of North East Ohio continue the Girl Scout mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. They’re the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. With Girl Scouts, girls can find they can do something amazing.

It’s never too late to join. Find a troop today at gsneo.org/mom.”
