When Tracy first approached me with this review, I was very excited! I have tried a little of this and a little of that to teach my eager four year old, Kylie, how to read; but, I really felt like I wanted a book to follow. I wanted lessons laid out for me to teach, one by one. And I didn’t want to spend $100+ on a pricy curriculum.
Just to clarify, my four year old, Kylie, is a VERY eager learner! When her older brother sits down to “do school” she is ready for a lesson too! I do not believe that all four year olds should be in a lesson book learning to read. You have to take each child individually and assess their readiness and eagerness for the subject; and, use your own judgement as a parent.
Kylie is ready, and I won’t squash her enthusiasm by telling her she is to young.
I am a new homeschool mom (this is our first year) and teaching my children to read is the most intimidating part of homeschooling for me! When The Reading Lesson came in the mail it seemed like a very practical and user-friendly book.
The pages are in black and white (fancy color can be a distraction, in my opinion). There are twenty lessons. For children under five they recommend one page per day, for children between five and six it’s two to three pages per day and for children over six three or more pages per day.
The book also comes with a CD-ROM that contains a set of handwriting lessons to coordinate with each reading lesson and a complete pdf of the book. This is very helpful.
At the beginning of each lesson I went through the pdf and printed out the pages I wanted for that lesson. For example, the first page of the lesson is a list of the new letters and a picture that goes with them {c says k as in cat with a picture of a cat}. I printed those pages, let Kylie color them and we hung them on the wall for reinforcement.
The Reading Lesson (with book, bunny and cd) recommended for ages 3-7. Costs $70.95 but on sale right now for $44.95.
At the time of this posting you can find The Reading Lesson book on Amazon for $15.99 plus FREE Shipping. I do not believe the bunny comes with it – I am not sure about the cd. Check it out here. The Reading Lesson has a 4.6 Star rating and over 250 reviews!
She breezed through the first two lessons because of the other random work we had been doing; and, we are slowing down in lesson three. What has really made me happy with this curriculum is that Kylie finally understands how to blend the letters together, c-a-t says cat. The Reading Lesson uses a little bar under each letter, and I think that helps her say each letter individually then blend them together.
Yesterday Kylie picked up a random “easy-reader” type book and actually was able to read many of the words! Even the words she could not read (hasn’t learned the letter sounds yet), when I gave her the individual letter sounds, she was able to blend them into a word!
I am so happy with where The Reading Lesson has taken Kylie in her journey to reading, we are both very excited to keep on working through the lessons!

I want to win this for my 3 1/2 year old daughter. I told myself that if I could have her reading enough to be able to read 5 different books before she goes into kindergarten then I will trust myself enough to homeschool. I REALLY want to homeschool!
We’re just learning to read and this would be such a big help!
I think it would be great for my sons
I would love this! Doing preschool with my daughter and the little one I watch
I’d like it to teach my son.
I want to win because our last book got destroyed and I think this book is wonderful to teach your children to read.
I would love this for my daughter to use!
I want to win because I have a 6.5 year old struggling to learn to read. It feels like we have tried everything. This is also something I can use for my 3 year old when she is ready.
My grandson is 5 and is learning to read at school and he loves reading. I think this will help him and would be fun at the same time.
I am still trying to teach my daughter to read and this would be useful!
